GEORGE TOWN: A freelance phone repairman charged with causing the death of an unemployed man, was granted a RM20,000 bail by a Sessions Court here.

M. Dharmanathan, 33, (pic) was alleged to have caused S. Muniandi’s death at the Leith Street-Penang Road junction at 2.18am on Aug 9.

He pleaded not guilty to culpable homicide not amounting to murder under Section 304(a) of the Penal Code which carries a maximum sentence of 30 years’ jail, or a fine or both.

Sessions judge Roslan Hamid granted bail to Dharmanathan with one surety and also ordered him to report to the state police headquarters at Penang Road every Monday.

No bail was posted at press time.

It was reported that Muniandi was killed on the spot after a car rammed into his motorcycle.

Police then obtained CCTV footage that showed the driver and passenger alighting from the vehicle and punching the man after ramming into him twice.

The hit-and-run accident took a new twist after police investigations revealed that the accident could have been staged.
