Ali Hamsa Re-Elected As Capam President
Tan Sri Dr Ali HamsaPUTRAJAYA: Chief Secretary to the Malaysian Government Tan Sri Dr Ali Hamsa has been unanimously re-elected as the President of the Commonwealth Association for Public Administration and Management (CAPAM) for the 2016-2018 term, making him the first person in the association's history to hold the post for two terms.CAPAM chief executive officer Gay Hamilton made the announcement after the board of directors meeting held during the 2016 CAPAM Biennial Conference, here today, to select the association's leadership for the new term.
"I was very pleased that the board asked Dr Ali, very unanimously to do a second term. He has been an excellent president, very supportive, and has good ideas," she told Bernama.
Ali, appointed as the 13th Chief Secretary to the Government in June 2012, joined the civil service in 1981 and had served in various capacities before being appointed Director-General of the Public-Private Partnership Unit in the Prime Minister's Department in April 2009.
Ali, 60, is also Chairman of the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) Corp, MyHSR (High Speed Rail) Corp, Malaysian Integrity Institute (IIM), and Bintulu Port Holdings Berhad.
He also spearheads the National Blue Ocean Strategy initiatives, a multi-ministry and multi-agency collaborative effort, in line with the national transformation agenda.
Ali, who was born in Kluang, Johor, obtained a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree from Universiti Malaya before furthering his studies at the Oklahoma State University, United States where he obtained a Masters in Economics in 1986, followed by a PhD in Environmental Sciences and Economics in 1997.
Former Chief Secretary to the Government Tun Ahmad Sarji Abdul Hamid had once held the post of CAPAM president, from 1996 to 1998.
The CAPAM biennial conference themed Innovation: Public Service Imperative, is being held at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre (PICC) since yesterday. The three-day event ends tomorrow.
A total of 800 participants from 53 Commonwealth countries are attending the conference.
This is the third time Malaysia is hosting the conference after successfully organising the event in 2014 and 1998.
