RAWANG: Several thousand devotees gathered at St Jude’s Church to bid a tearful farewell to Father Phillips Muthu who died of a heart attack in Terengganu.

Family members, relatives and parishioners from Penang, Johor, Terengganu, Sabah and Sawarak gathered for Rev Phillips’ Funeral Mass. It was presided by Rev Archbishop Julian Leow of the Kuala Lumpur Archdiocese.

During the Homily, Rev Father Clarence Devadass, 50, from Rawang, fondly recalled Rev Phillips in the early days when he was ordained here as a priest on May 1, 1990.

“He was my Sunday school teacher and one of those who inspired me to be a priest,” Rev Clarence said.

He said Rev Phillips. 56, touched the lives and hearts of many.

“What is important is not written in stone but in the heart. The memory of Father Phillips will be forever etched in our hearts.”

Present at the Homily were Rev Bishop Sebastian Francis of the Penang Diocese and Rev Archbishop Anthony Soter Fernandez, the former head of the Kuala Lumpur Archdiocese.

Many were seen wiping away tears during the three-hour mass, particularly when Rev Phillips’s coffin was led out by fellow priests before he was buried at the Kajang Cemetery.

Among those who came to pay their last respects was Raven Paul, 34, from Terengganu.
