Youth facing murder charge found dead in lockup
JOHOR BARU: A youth charged with the murder of a woman and her daughter in Ulu Tiram in September was found hanging in the lockup of the Ulu Choh Remand Centre here, according to police.
Iskandar Puteri police chief Supt Noor Hashim Mohamad said R. Subramaniam, 20, was hanging by a piece of cloth from a small window about 2m-high by a warden who was patrolling at 3.06am on Friday.
The warden summoned the help of colleagues and they quickly cut the cloth and brought the youth down, he said in a statement.
“The detainee was taken to the Sultan Ismail Hospital and was confirmed dead,” he added.
On Sept 29, Subramaniam and another youth, L. Uvaneswaran, also 20, had been charged in the Johor Baru magistrate’s court with the double murder of M. Mariayee, 56, and her 17-year-old daughter C. Durga Devi.
The woman and her daughter were killed at No. 51, Jalan Beladau 40, Taman Puteri Wangsa, between 10am and 11am on Sept 21.
Both the youths were charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder, which carries the death penalty.
