PUTRAJAYA: Traffic offenders beware. The Road Transport Department (RTD) has listed down seven major traffic offences under its Chinese New Year Strategic Op 2017 and offenders caught will be hauled straight to court.
Announcing the latest enforcement crackdown at a press conference here, RTD director-general Datuk Seri Nazri Siron said: “We are not going to settle with a compound anymore. We are taking the traffic offenders to court immediately.”
The seven major traffic offences are beating the traffic lights, overtaking on double lines, driving in the emergency lane, cutting queues, using mobile phones while driving dangerously, not using seat belts and not using helmets.
“We are working hard towards achieving zero fatal accidents.
“There will be no roadblocks because we’ve realised that roadblocks will only add on to heavy traffic congestion during the festive seasons.
“So we are using more strategic approaches in cutting down fatal road accidents, including increasing the Perception of Being Caught (POBC) among our road users,” said Nazri.
Immediate court action aside, the serious traffic offenders will also be slapped with a maximum fine of RM2000.
For commercial vehicle drivers, their PSV/GDL license will be suspended for a month, Nazri added.
Two thousand RTD enforcement officers will be deployed under the Chinese New Year Strategic Op 2017, on top of the 14 speed trap cameras and seven static safety cameras that will be stationed at accident-prone areas on highways across the country.
“We are also working with PLUS and using seven of their static safety cameras to catch traffic offenders. These static cameras are located along the major highways that have recorded the highest number of fatal accidents, including Km17 of Jalan Gua Musang – Kuala Krai in Kelantan,” revealed Nazri.
The Chinese New Year Strategic Op will be carried out from 21 Jan to 5 Feb 2017.
