GEORGE TOWN: Penang police has arrested 24 men believed to be involved with an organised crime group known as Gang 04.

State Police Chief Datuk Chuah Ghee Lye said that 24 men, aged between 20 to 60, were arrested between July 18 and July 22 in several raids in Penang and Negeri Sembilan, in an operation code named 'Ops Cantas Tanjung'.

He said police also seized six cars worth RM133,844, Indian Rupees 34,110, 29 mobile phones, gold jewellery, 21 bottles of liquor and three sickle knives during the raids.

"The men arrested were remanded for 28 days under Section 4 of the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 and the remand will expire on Aug 15.

"Of the men, 21 will be charged at George Town Sessions Court on Monday under Section 130 V of the Penal Code, while action will be taken against the remaining three under Crime Prevention Act 1959," he told reporters in a press conference here yesterday.

Chuah said action against the gang would also be taken under Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001.

He said based on police record from 2015 to 2017, Gang 04 has been involved in a total 29 criminal cases, including murder, extortion, criminal intimidation and causing injuries.

"We are also on the hunt for 11 other gang members aged between 20 and 40," he said.
