KUALA LUMPUR: A lone robber pulled off a brazen heist at a bank in the heart of the city today, walking away with RM46,000 in cash.

The man, armed with a parang, had entered the UOB Bank in Jalan Sultan Ismail at 12.15pm and walked up to one of the counters.

At the time, only two workers were in the bank, with the rest out for lunch.

The robber, who was wearing a mask, threatened one of the staff with the parang. He forced the staff to fill a bag with cash before leaving the bank.

The man reportedly fled in the direction of Sungai Wang Plaza.

It is learnt that a security guard was on duty at the bank, but he wasn’t aware of the robbery taking place.

Dang Wangi police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Sukri Kaman said the bank staff was unharmed.

“Police are tracking down the suspect,” he said today.

Meanwhile, a UOB Malaysia spokesman said the branch was immediately secured to ensure that all staff and customers were safe and unhurt, and to aid the police in their investigations.

The spokesman said following the incident, the self-service terminals in the branch were kept open while over-the-counter services were redirected to the nearby Jalan Imbi branch.
