PETALING JAYA: PAS will lose out at the 14th general election if it continues to collaborate with Umno, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said.

The Pakatan Harapan chairman said that PAS is now supporting a party that its president Datuk Seri Hadi Awang had once condemned as “infidels”.

"Hadi now is a strong supporter of Umno despite not rejecting his previous proclamation that Umno are infidels," Dr Mahathir posted on his chedet blog on Thursday.

"This is because PAS' decision to contest in GE14 will reduce the amount of votes for Pakatan Harapan and bring victory to Najib.

Dr Mahathir, also the chairman of Opposition party Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia, pointed to Hadi's message, now known as "Amanat Hadi", in which he described Umno as a party of infidels for supporting the "colonialist's constitution".

Hadi had also told PAS members that they must be willing to die in their struggle against the Umno government.

Dr Mahathir said Hadi's message had inspired the 1985 Memali tragedy where 18 people, among them four policemen, were killed after the police launched an operation against a religious extremist group and its leader Ibrahim Mahmud.

Dr Mahathir was then the prime minister, but has denied he was responsible, laying the blame on his then deputy, Tun Musa Hitam.

"Hadi should feel remorse as he was the cause of the riot and the deaths of policemen and civilians in Memali," Dr Mahathir said, calling for a Royal Commission of Inquiry to investigate Hadi over his alleged role in the incident
