SUNGAI PETANI: Two men armed with a pistol robbed a goldsmith's shop here and carted off with about RM600,000 worth of jewellery.

Kuala Muda OCPD Asst Comm Saifi Abdul Hamid said on Monday (Dec 11) that the suspects, both wearing full-faced helmets, barged into the shop located at Jalan Dewa here at about 1.30pm.

"As soon as they got into the shop, one of the suspects pulled out a pistol and instructed the workers and the owner to hand over all the displayed jewellery. Within five minutes, they made off with the stolen loot worth about RM600,000," he said in a statement.

He added that police received a call about the incident at 1.45pm.

ACP Saifi said during the heist, five workers and the outlet owner were inside the shop. All six were unharmed.

The armed men then fled the scene on a motorcycle.

The duo were said to have headed to Jalan Petri towards Sungai Petani town.

ACP Saifi said the closed-circuit television footage retrieved from the shop would be scrutinised.

He said statements from the owner and workers have been taken, adding that the owner did not hire a security guard.

The case is being investigated under Section 395/397 of the Penal Code for gang robbery.

ACP Saifi said the incident was the second time since the shop was robbed since it operated 28 years ago. The first was in 1993.
