PETALING JAYA: A day after Johor Crown Prince Tunku Ismail Tunku Ibrahim spent over RM1mil on groceries for shoppers in a shopping centre in Johor Baru, shoppers flooded another hypermarket in Pontian following fake news that he was doing so again.

Despite multiple announcements that the news was fake, about 1,000 shoppers showed up at the hypermarket as early as 10am on Thursday (April 12).

Many proceeded to fill their shopping carts and even caused congestion inside the hypermarket.

Outside the building, police were seen controlling heavy traffic.

Econsave manager Mas Imran Adam estimated that about 300 shopping carts were abandoned.

She said management had called the police earlier at midnight to confirm if the news of Tunku Ismail's visit was true and were told that it was not.

"Many items were damaged and we have a big job of clearing it up," Mas Imran said, adding that it caused a lot of trouble for staff members.

"To make matters worse, many refused to believe that Tunku Ismail was not coming despite multiple announcements that the news was fake," she said.

A voice message by an unknown man saying that Tunku Ismail would be visiting every district in Johor to treat the people to groceries had gone viral over WhatsApp.

He claimed that Tunku Ismail would be spending approximately RM100,000 at the hypermarket at 12pm on Thursday and would give RM200 to every family present.

On Wednesday (April 11), pandemonium ensued at a shopping centre in Tebrau when Tunku Ismail turned up unexpectedly and offered to foot up to RM3,000 in groceries for every shopper.

Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim, who was at the mall for less than five minutes, eventually spent more than RM1mil.

Most shoppers were seen taking up to three trolleys each. The mall had to increase their security due to overwhelming crowds. – Sinar Harian
