KUALA LUMPUR, April 17 — Malaysian celebrities came together today in support of a campaign to encourage responsible social media behaviour and to oppose cyberbullying and fake news.

Dubbed “End Cyberbullying and Spreading False Information”, the movement was launched at the Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre by actors Neelofa and Datuk Hans Isaac.

It aims to educate the public on avenues of protection and available channels for support.

Neelofa said there is a difference between using social media to express one’s opinions and using it as a tool for cyberbullying.

“Certain individuals might be inclined to chastise, criticise and humiliate an individual.

“The worst part is when such people consider it their duty and responsibility to ‘reprimand’ someone online, and outright refuse to admit that what they are doing is cyberbullying,” she said.

Neelofa said cyberbullying and slander damaged the world’s view of Malaysians.

“Foreigners would be shocked to see the level of vitriol and viciousness that Malaysians can come up with online.

“This campaign is, therefore, aimed at changing people’s perceptions, and make them think twice before making such comments,” she said.

Also present at the event was caretaker Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Salleh Said Keruak, actresses Maya Karin and Adibah Noor, musicians Nora Danish, Atilia Haron and Joe Flizzow, former beauty queen Kavita Sidhu, and Miss Universe Malaysia 2018 Jane Teoh Jun.
