PETALING JAYA: Two friends were sentenced to 12 years’ jail and ordered to be given seven strokes of the rotan each by the Sessions Court here today, for committing armed gang robbery in January.

Judge Mabel S. Muttiah meted out the sentences on mechanic S. Theventhiran, 38, and personal driver M. Nagan Kumar, 40, after they changed their plea to guilty to an amended charge.

Both men were ordered to serve sentence from the date of their arrest on Jan 28.

According to the amended charge, the duo were charged with robbing liquor shop, Great Son Research, of jewellery, three mobile phones, wrist watch and liquor worth a total of RM40,000, while armed with machetes in Jalan USJ 21/3 Subang Jaya here at 10am on Jan 26.

Meanwhile, judge Norshila Kamaruddin sentenced Theventhiran and Nagan Kumar to 10 years’ jail for committing armed gang robbery at a hotel in January.

They were charged with robbing, while armed with machetes, Muhammad Romi Saputra Nazri, 23, of his mobile phone and RM475 at a hotel in USJ 21, Subang Jaya here at 3.45am on Jan 28.

The court ordered both jail sentences to run concurrently.

Earlier, deputy public prosecutors V. V. Suloshani and Shahzreen Nadia Zulkipli urged the court to impose a deterrent sentence as the offences were serious. - Bernama © New Straits Times Press
