PETALING JAYA: A 32-year-old tuition teacher took her own life after being cheated of RM75,000 by a man she never met.
Liew Wai Yi was found dead on Sunday at the parking floor of a high-rise building in Seri Kembangan where she was believed to have fallen from.
According to her younger sister Wai Hong, her family then discovered text messages on her phone that suggested that Liew had most likely been the victim of a con man.
According to Wai Hong, her sister had been in an online relationship with a man named Aslam Roger Lloris Mustafaa since early February through WeChat and WhatsApp, but the family believed that the name and profile picture were fake.
In the messages, “Aslam” claimed that he suffered from a heart disease and needed money for an operation in Singapore, and checks revealed that Wai Yi started transferring money to him via ATM from Feb 9.
In all, 14 transactions were made to the same Hong Leong Bank account, the last one on April 29, with amounts ranging from RM400 to RM11,000.
Her family believed that Wai Yi had borrowed money to make the payments because her pay as a tuition teacher alone was not enough to come up with the cumulative amount of RM75,000 in just three months.
At a press conference at the MCA Public Complaints Bureau yesterday, Wai Hong revealed several messages between the deceased and “Aslam” such as “3 month u get my 75k, I want to learn from u”, “My parents will kill me and can’t forgive me if they know I hv borrowed the money who I haven’t met” and “I will die soon. Pls notice my news in TV or newspaper”.
Wai Hong said her sister was acting strangely about a week before her death, but did not confide in anyone about her problems.
Bureau head Datuk Seri Michael Chong said his team had zeroed in on a potential suspect who was from Subang Jaya, and he would be notifying the police soon.
Serdang district police confirmed that they were investigating the case.
